Tourist Info - Pomino, Chianti & Florence:
Whether you want to relax by the pool, sample the delectable
wines, succulent salcicce (sausages) or explore the art, architecture
and nature of the countryside there is no better base from which
to do so that the Fattoria di Petrognano.
Pomino is located in the northern reaches of Chianti Toscana.
It is tucked into the hills that rise up towards the north,
marking the boundary of Tuscany to the northeast with Emilia
Romagna. At 485 metres (1200 feet) above sea level the cool
hill air is a refreshing retreat from the hot plains of Tuscany
during the summer.
While only 30 kilometres on good roads to Florence, Pomino
is just off the beaten track, set in woods and meadows that
have remained largely untouched for centuries and are ideal
for relaxing walks.
If you are interested in history or wine there is the Villa
di Poggio Reale, in Rufina. Sitting high over the town, the
villa is a perfect example of 15th century architecture, and
houses the Museo della Vite e del Vino, Museum of Vineyards
and Wine where you can find exhibits on wine making paraphernalia,
hand-blown glass of the 1700s and documents regarding the history
of viticulture.
If experiencing wine through visiting vineyards is more your
style it is here that the wine trail of Chianti Rufina and Pomino
begins - the Strada dei Vini Chianti Rufina e Pomino, literally
home of Pomino DOC. This is the smallest DOC wine growing area
in the world, but size is not everything and Pomino wine has
been appreciated at least since the beginning of the 1700s.
Red wine is made from Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Merlot, and white wine is made from the grape varieties
Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Trebbiano of Tuscany. Last but
not least, the delicious sweet dessert wine Vin Santo is made
here too.
Exploring the rest of Tuscany is easy from here. Florence is
nearby and easily reachable by a half hour train ride from Rufina.
Driving south you can explore the rest of Chianti, going east
you can visit the delightful hilltop town of Poppi with its
stunning castle, or Arezzo. For racing fans the famous Mugello
racetrack is nearby, or if picking up some Gucci, Armani, Max
Mara or Prada is more appealing their factory outlets can be
found 20 kilometres away at Incisa.
